Rules for free parking in D.C:

  1. Parking is free on Sundays. If you find a metered spot that’s open on a Sunday, you’re home free.
  2. Free Overnight Parking. This also applies to metered spaces. Most meters are enforced between 7 AM and 6:30 PM, Monday through Saturday, but make sure you check the times on the meter nearest you.
  3. If you’re a resident, get a permit. Residential parking permits in D.C. make free parking a breeze. Many of the neighborhoods that offer 2-hour free parking become limitless free parking if you have a permit for the neighborhood.
